Twitter was abuzz on Thursday after Patriotic Alliance President Gayton McKenzie posted that Koen had unveiled a statue of himself after being the first mayor to finish a term.

There were mixed reactions with @Clint_ZA saying: “A few lies in this. It’s not a statue of him, it was not unveiled by him and I can’t find confirmation that it was state-funded. If it was, it is not the expensive metal statue others use.”

@VelemseniVilane said: “He is a real legend.”

McKenzie’s second tweet said DA members were attacking him and they indicated it was not a statue but rather a monument “in his honor (sic) for being the first mayor to finish a term, it’s even worse, what monumental nonsense.”

It also triggered a flood of funny responses. @ZwelakheNgwane posted: “They praising a fish for swimming.”

@Qengqani said: “That’s like rewarding someone for breathing in oxygen, not even one single achievement to accompany his statue.”

@nellaf21 said: “During a pandemic wasting money on nonsense like this. Can put in the same WhatsApp group as those who stole via PPE.”
